Over twenty years have gone by since the horrific 9/11 terrorist strikes rocked the world. A profound and enduring scar was left by the terrible events of September 2001, which resulted in the destruction of the World Trade Center. The anxiety and uncertainty of that day still haunt many who were present when the atrocities occurred, making them tremble at the memories. Shah Rukh Khan, the Bollywood star, has one of the many unsung tales of survival and tenacity that have surfaced over the years. During the notorious 9/11 attacks, the Jawan actor talked candidly about his terrifying experience of being stuck in New York with his family.

Shah Rukh Khan recounted being in New York after the devastating 9/11 events in an old 2010 interview that has come to light. While promoting My Name Is Khan, a movie that exposes Islamophobia in the wake of 9/11, SRK spoke to DW News about his personal experience of seeing the terrible events as they happened. On September 11, 2001, the actor recalls being in New York with his wife, Gauri Khan, his little son, Aryan Khan, and Karan Johar’s mother, Hiroo Johar. He revealed: “My director’s mother (Hiroo), my wife (Gauri), my little son (Aryan), and we were to do an interview for the launch of a film called Asoka. And the rest of the crew was supposed to fly off to Toronto four hours before us.

According to SRK, Hiroo Johar woke him up that morning and insisted that he watch the news on TV. The celebrity initially thought there had been an accident on the plane his film crew had boarded. Only a few moments later did he realize that the reality was much more severe than he had thought. According to Shah Rukh:

I was awakened. When Mrs. Hiroo, Karan’s mother, showed me the television, I assumed it was the plane our crew was traveling on, which is why she was displaying the catastrophe. I asked, “What has happened?” when I noticed reporters waiting to conduct the interviews on the floor beneath my room.
