The entire country has been deeply shaken by the Meghalaya murder case. On May 16, 2025, Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi, who were married on May 11, 2025, left for Meghalaya for their honeymoon. After his wife’s suspicious involvement in the murder, along with that of her claimed boyfriend and others, Raja’s body was eventually discovered in a gorge. Devi, Sonam Raghuvanshi’s father, owns a plywood company with an annual revenue of Rs. 12–15 crore, according to a News18 article. Sonam’s brother, Govinda, used to manage the company once his health worsened. They met when Sonam joined the company two years after Raj Kushwaha, a 21-year-old, started as a supervisor of the billing department with a compensation package of Rs. 20,000. Sonam and Raj apparently became close after that. Because Raj was younger than Sonam, he used to call her “didi” to allay any suspicions among the family and coworkers.

The custom of matchmaking within the Raghuvanshi community was used to arrange the marriage of Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi. Regarding Raja, he worked for the joint family’s transport company, which generated between Rs. 8 and 10 crore in revenue. Within days of their marriage, Raja’s mother confessed to him that Sonam had shown little interest in him, according to stories in the Hindustan Times. She questioned Sonam about her lack of interest in Raja, even though she was unaware of Sonam’s purported lover. Sonam said that her absence was due to some important work in her office.

However, according to sources, Sonam Raghuvanshi told her boyfriend Raj in the recorded conversations that she didn’t enjoy having a sexual relationship with Raja Raghuvanshi. According to India Today, Sonam and her purported lover, Raj, had only three days to prepare the murder of her husband, Raja. According to sources, two additional individuals were hired in addition to Sonam and Raj.
