What started off as a lovely honeymoon retreat in the tranquil Meghalayan valleys has become one of India’s most horrifying murder mysteries of 2025. The ruthless murder of 29-year-old businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, which was purportedly planned by his own wife Sonam, her lover, and three contract murderers, has shocked the nation and raised doubts about the morality and reliability of marriage itself. The police now disclose how they uncovered the murderous scheme behind Raja’s death as the investigation continues to take increasingly startling turns. A mangalsutra and a ring left behind at a guesthouse turned out to be an apparently insignificant detail.
The investigators discovered Sonam Raghuvanshi’s mangalsutra and toe ring in a bag that the pair had left behind at a Sohra guesthouse, said to Deputy Inspector General DNR Marak. It was discovered that the pair had booked into the homestay for a short time, but they left the bag behind when they went on a trekking excursion to Nongriat since they were unable to reserve a bed in advance.
The policeman said to NDTV: “In the room of the homestay, we found Sonam’s mangalsutra and a ring in the suitcase, which gave us the first doubt. Why would a woman who recently got married leave her mangalsutra in a suitcase during their honeymoon?”
This seemingly little hint turned out to be vital to the inquiry, which finally revealed a terrifying murder-for-hire scheme that claimed the life of the unwary groom who thought he and his wife were enjoying a happy honeymoon.
On May 11, 2025, Raja and Sonam were married in Indore, and on May 20, 2025, they traveled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. On May 23, 2025, just a few days into their journey, the pair trekked to Nongriat village in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya to reach the well-known double-decker root bridge. Raja had no idea that his trip through the picturesque hills would be his last and that he was entering a dark conspiracy purportedly planned by his wedded bride, the one he trusted the most.

Sonam raghuvanshi:
Police said that Sonam tricked Raja into going to a secluded location close to Weisawdong Falls so that he could take some picturesque pictures. There, he was ambushed from behind by three contract killers who were waiting at another homestay and used sharp weapons to kill him. Sonam is also accused of helping to dispose of his body in the ravine.
