Whether you are a ’90s kid or a Gen Z, if there is one show that has been tickling our funny bones across generations of Indians, it’s none other than the iconic Hindi sitcom, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC). The show has been running successfully for over 15 years now, and despite its various twists and turns, nothing beats the hilarious and heartwarming chemistry between ‘Jethalal’ (Dilip Joshi) and ‘Dayaben’ (Disha Vakani).

Fans have enjoyed many memorable moments from Dilip and Disha’s on-screen antics, but one that sticks out is Jethalal’s famous slogan, “Ae paagal aurat,” which still inspires memes today! However, did you realize that the sitcom no longer features this iconic line? Recently, Dilip Joshi revealed the reasons behind its termination. The humorous back-and-forth between Jethalal Gada (Dilip Joshi) and his on-screen wife Dayaben (Disha Vakani) will be remembered with fondness by TMKOC fans. They had a hilarious chemistry. OG fans will always remember Jethalal’s famous statement, “Ae paagal aurat,” which he frequently yelled out anytime Daya did something goofy or ridiculous, even though they still miss seeing the two together on screen.

The show’s actor, Dilip Joshi, also known as “Jethalal,” recently revealed something unexpected on comedian Sorabh Pant’s podcast: his famous line, “Ae paagal aurat,” was never written! In reality, it was his own improvisation: a spontaneous statement that, when combined with the iconic facial expressions of Disha Vakani, created the ideal comedic masala that fans were unaware they required. As they say, the rest is history. Dilip Joshi disclosed:

“Woh maine improvise kiya, jo ‘paagal aurat’ wala tha.”

The conversation wasn’t warmly received by everyone, even if it was widely accepted. According to Dilip Joshi, a women’s rights organization took exception with the statement, claiming it was insulting and disrespectful to women. The creators of TMKOC made the decision to remove the line entirely from the program in response to these worries. According to Dilip, the conversation caused a lot of resentment and even launched what he called a women’s liberation movement. He revealed:

“Baad mein, kuch women’s liberation movement ya koi movement tha, mujhe bataya gaya, ‘Aage se, aap yeh nahi bolenge’.

TMKOC:

The line is still very much alive in the minds of fans despite being forbidden. “Ae Pagal Aurat,” whether it is via memes, retro episodes, or sentimental discussions, continues to be a fan favorite from the heyday of TMKOC. Fans especially missed the classic Jetha-Dayaben moments after Disha Vakani quit the program in 2017 to devote more time to her family.
