Director Anurag Kashyap has expressed his disenchantment with the way platforms like Netflix and Amazon have changed, after initially viewing them as a means of granting Indian filmmakers more creative freedom. He recently voiced his displeasure with the caliber of video being created, saying it has gotten “even worse than television.” Additionally, he stated that audiences are being dumbed down by OTT services.

In particular, Anurag Kashyap criticized popular streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video for putting revenue and user expansion before of originality. He pointed out that there is little opportunity for artistic creativity because their content strategies are largely determined by algorithms.

The director discussed his previous Netflix partnerships, such as the crime drama series Sacred Games and the anthology Lust Stories, in an interview with The Hindu. When these projects were created, he said, Netflix’s debut in the Indian market was viewed as a potential possibility, which led to some high-caliber work.

But he pointed out that things started to go south around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. He claimed that the content currently generated on these channels is not up to par with television and accused them of trying to “dumb down” viewers.
