With Yash Raj Films’ iconic blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) becoming the first statue honoring Indian cinema to be erected in London, the Heart of London Business Alliance today announced a new addition to the exciting “Scenes in the Square” movie trail in Leicester Square. DDLJ, a timeless and multi-award-winning romantic comedy that also marked Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut, will begin its 30-year festivities today. It is one of the most beloved blockbuster Hindi films of all time.
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, two Bollywood superstars, will be shown in the bronze statue striking the famous DDLJ pose. Today’s announcement, which is scheduled for release in the spring of this year, demonstrates how well-liked the movie is among the more than five million British South Asians. DDLJ is a significant milestone in South Asian and Indian pop culture worldwide. In remembrance of this scene, the new statue will be placed outside the Odeon Cinema on the eastern terrace. The movie also takes place in Tower Bridge, King’s Cross Station, Horseguards Avenue, and Hyde Park in London.
The movie has had a significant influence on Indian cinema and has become so well-known worldwide that even US President Barack Obama mentioned it on his formal state visit to India. The cultural relevance of the movie is still present in the UK, where Come Fall In Love: The DDLJ Musical, a brand-new musical based on DDLJ, will debut at the Manchester Opera House on May 29, 2025. The movie’s star, Shah Rukh Khan, is the most popular actor of our day, with over 140 million social media followers.
“It’s great to have the chance to add Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, who are such titans of international cinema, to our trail,” says Mark Williams, Deputy Chief Executive of Heart of London Business Alliance. One of the biggest and most successful Bollywood movies ever made is Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, and we’re thrilled about the opportunity to be the first movie to use Leicester Square as a real setting. The statue celebrates London’s unique variety and pays homage to Bollywood’s widespread appeal. We have no doubt that it will draw moviegoers from all over the world to Leicester Square, the center of entertainment and cinema.
