Kalki Koechlin, an actress, has spoken out about the harassment she has experienced from Bollywood bosses. She told how a prominent producer made an unwanted move at her while she was working in Cannes as a student. She was harassed by another producer in Mumbai years later. Kalki claimed that even though she was angry at the time, she decided it would be safer for her to leave those circumstances.

“There have been instances where I have been in uncomfortable situations,” Kalki said to Zoom. This industry did not have one such incidence. It took place at Cannes. At the time, I was a student in London and had traveled to Cannes as a Nokia phone promotional lady, so I wasn’t even an actor. I won’t reveal the identity of the Indian producer.

“Meet him, he is a big guy,” she recounted, “and they put me in touch with him because he knew somebody who knew my mother.” I went to see his Cannes premiere and met him. When I asked him if he had any leads in work at that time, he made it very obvious that I needed to be with him for things to happen. He then asked me out to dinner in London. Naturally, I declined, thanked them, and that was the end of it.

Years later, she experienced a similar incident in Mumbai. The other instance, she recalled, was when she went to Mumbai for a film audition and the producer said, “Oh, you want to do this film, but I need to get to know you because it’s a big launch.” I apologized, even though he was essentially saying the same thing. I don’t want to waste either of our time.

Kalki Koechlin:

“I have an angry rage inside of me,” Kalki remarked. Like any other woman, I want to punch that person in the face, but I tell myself to hold back and just leave the situation because it’s unsafe and for other reasons. It’s a sort of experience, a type of loathing.
