Yesterday, Mahavatar Narasimha became the first animated movie in India to gross over Rs. 100 crore. On its second Monday, the movie brought in a solid Rs. 7.25 crore, bringing its eleven-day total to Rs. 102.25 crore. It overtook Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as the highest-grossing animated film in the nation only this past Friday.

Given that animated films often do better on weekends and fade off on weekdays, the movie scarcely deviated from its Friday total of Rs. 8 crore, which is an amazing hold. In just four days of the second week, the movie has already surpassed its first-week total of Rs. 54.25 crore. It should approach Rs. 75 crore for the entire week, which would put it above Rs. 120 crore by Thursday. The movie has a chance to surpass Rs. 200 crore, but it might rely on how well it holds up against Independence Day blockbusters Coolie and War 2.

The South Indian dubbed versions of Mahavatar Narasimha have contributed significantly to the film’s pan-Indian appeal. As of right now, the split by language is as follows: Hindi accounts for Rs. 76.50 crore, Telugu for Rs. 22 crore, Kannada for Rs. 2.50 crore, and Tamil and Malayalam for Rs. 1.25 crore.

With some of the highest-grossing movies ever made, animation is one of the most lucrative genres worldwide. Ne Zha 2, a Chinese animated film, broke all previous box office records in the nation this year, earning nearly USD 2 billion. Animation is the most popular movie genre in a number of countries. However, relatively few people in India are interested in it. Kids don’t drive the box office in India, and the genre is frequently derided as “kids cinema.”

Although there is some appeal to religious animation, nothing has been successful up to this point, with the exception of the Punjabi movie Chaar Sahibzade. The first of the seven films in the announced cinematic universe is Mahavatar Narasimha. It is hoped that this movie and franchise will dispel the stigma and reveal the enormous potential of animation, which has already produced successful global blockbusters.
