With her popular and enduring television program, Shanti, Mandira Bedi has established herself. She debuted as an actress in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Although her part in the movie was brief, it had a significant impact. In a recent interview, Mandira talked about how she was traumatized when she was likened to Sunny Deol by the late choreographer Saroj Khan during the Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna filming.
An introduction of any kind is not necessary for Mandira. She has played a variety of roles and been a significant figure in the entertainment world for decades. In addition to inspiring fans with her training videos, one of her favorite performances was in DDLJ’s Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna song. She revealed in a recent Zoom interview that she was instructed to move her hips during the Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna song, something she had never done before.
Then, Saroj Khan warned her from dancing like Sunny Deol and disclosed: “I was asked to put my hand on my head and shake my hips and I told her, ‘This body movement I don’t understand. Saroj ji said to me, ‘You are shaking your shoulders like Sunny Deol. You need to shake your hips, women shake hips.’ So I was traumatised. I don’t know how I got over the 4 days of that song.”
The late Saroj Khan was a rigorous choreographer with keen eyes who preferred flawless motions. Throughout the remainder of her film, Mandira blinked her eyes and sulked as best she could, unable to comprehend how she had recovered from Saroj’s remarks. She found everything about the event to be fascinating.
As she put it: “And when I saw myself, I thought, ‘Oh God, there is not very much of me in the film.’ But I have only seen the film once, during the premiere. I haven’t watched it since then. People send me pictures of when they’re watching Dilwale from their TVs or from Maratha Mandir or wherever, and they say, ‘Picture of you, what a classic!’ But I haven’t seen it since the premiere. And I look back and think, ‘It’s nice to be a part, as I said, a small part of a very big film and a part of history.
