Even after several decades, Aamir Khan 2001 film Lagaan is still regarded as a classic and a turning point in Indian cinema. Director Ashutosh Gowariker recently disclosed that Amitabh Bachchan told Aamir that every film in which he had provided his voice had failed before agreeing to narrate the movie. Fortunately, Lagaan became a cult masterpiece and Big B’s “warning” was not realized.

Ashutosh Gowariker revealed an intriguing behind-the-scenes tale about landing Amitabh Bachchan as the movie’s narrator in a video posted on Aamir Khan’s YouTube account. Gowariker disclosed that the superstar really offered a caution rather than immediately saying “yes.” “Whenever I give a voiceover to the movie, it doesn’t work,” he said Aamir. The movie doesn’t work. Go ahead if you’re ready to take that chance, but remember what I told you previously,” the director recalled.

Thankfully, Aamir Khan remained unfazed. He dismissed it with a laugh, showed Big B the movie, and after he saw the vision and recognized the distinctive narrating style, he consented to provide his voice. As they say, the rest is history.

Additionally, director Ashutosh Gowariker revealed in the same interview how Amitabh Bachchan’s voice transformed Lagaan’s opening, bringing the narrative to life and elevating it. Big B’s narration was a potent way to introduce the movie’s setting.

Aamir previously discussed how Javed Akhtar warned him before making Lagaan in an interview with India Today. He claimed it was too dangerous, citing the rustic atmosphere, the use of Awadhi, and even Amitabh Bachchan’s narration.

Amitabh Bachchan:

On the professional front, Aamir Khan is preparing for the October release of Sitaare Zameen Par, his next movie, which was revealed last year. Aamir Khan, Darsheel Safary, and Genelia Deshmukh play important parts in this RS Prasanna-directed film. The movie, which will be released in theaters on June 20, 2025, is based on the Spanish film Champions from 2018.
