Sonu Nigam, a Bollywood musician, has been receiving a lot of criticism for his recent comments made at his Bengaluru show. A young man allegedly urged the performer to sing in Kannada on several occasions. Despite his love for Kannadigas, Nigam described the demand as “rudely threatening.” Additionally, he issued a statement on the Pahalgam terror attack that drew harsh criticism from pro-Kannada organizations who claim it linked their language struggle to terrorism.
Sonu Nigam has now clarified what transpired at the event in the midst of the criticism. He asserted that a small number of people were causing problems and explained that the goal was not to disparage the entire community but rather to address the bad behavior of a select minority who were “threatening,” not to demand Kannada music.
Sonu Nigam:
Sonu Nigam posted a video to Instagram on Saturday detailing the events that transpired during the Bengaluru concert. According to him, there were four or five people yelling “Kannada Kannada,” and thousands of others were halting them and requesting that they not disrupt the performance. Sonu Nigam remarked, “Un paanchon ko ye batana aur yaad dilaana bohot zaroori tha ki, Pahalgam mein jab pant utaari gayi thi, tab bhaasha nahi puchhi gayi thi” (It was crucial to remind those five that no one inquired about the language when the pants were removed in Pahalgam). Kannadadigas are beautiful people, he continued, and it’s crucial to avoid making generalizations about them.
“There’s nothing like that,” he remarked. No matter the state, there are four or five of these nasty people everywhere. However, it is crucial to remind them that you cannot allow them to intimidate you or force you to sing. Everyone on the planet is doing it with love. I carry an hour’s worth of Kannada songs when I arrive. However, it’s critical to put an immediate end to those who incite others.” He went on, “Kyunki ye bawaseer ban jaate hain phir baad mein.”
We must put an end to anyone who plants seeds of hatred in the country of love, he continued. Please refrain from making generalizations about Kannadigas because they are lovely people. After I finished my first song, there were only four or five boys who were staring at me with a furious expression. They were frightening rather than demanding. You can speak with those who were present.
On social media, a video of Sonu Nigam reprimanding the people for requesting a Kannada song went viral. Visibly irritated, Nigam interrupted the performance to say that, despite his affection for Kannadigas and his ability to sing some of his best Kannada songs, he felt that the demand was “rudely threatening.” “This is the reason behind the incident in Pahalgam,” he continued. Look who’s in front of you, please. I adore you all.

Kannada activists were incensed by this allusion to Pahalgam, the scene of a recent terror incident, which they saw as equating the Kannadigas’ language fight with terrorism.
